A recent video that is published on the popular social media platform TikTok has created a considerable amount of concern among parents and school administrations. In an email received by parents on 9th of September 2020, the school administration had to warn against the video that shows a young man taking his own life on the popular social media platform TikTok. The warning is being sent as an email blast by the board of education.
The email included a story from techcrunch website, and focused on the fact that not all the copies of the video was successfully removed from other social media websites. There is a call to parents to inform the school administration in case this video or other related traumatic event related to this video is being observed.

Although the email blast of board of education informing the parents about this kind of online threats is admissible, it's a predicament that parents and school administration need to take adhoc measures which will have limited capability of reducing this risk that our children are facing. The fact that this video has been shared among giant platforms already proves that the young audience has been subject to the disturbing and potentially harmful content, maybe more than once.
This example only shows how critical it is to have a mechanism that will give the parents ability to block unwanted content online, and not leave this critical decision to platform owners. The vast content that kids are consuming through social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc... or streaming services such as Youtube, Snapchat, etcKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK85 need to be verified and confirmed based on the filtering rules that parents would decide, not the money-hungry giant platforms.
Another aspect of the incident is the need for a new technology that will perform the content filtering selectively on some of the contents of a website, while leaving the remaining unharmful content untouched. This way, instead of completely blocking the children accessing the mainstream social media platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, Snapchat, selectively blocking and removing the harmful content within such platforms' feeds would yield the best experience for kids and the ultimate solution for parents. The children will even not be aware of the selective content filtering that's being applied while they will still consume good and clean content.
